Alabama Deer

I did not have anything but does on my camera this weekend. This pic was sent to me by a friend of mine that has a place in central Alabama. This seems to be where the deer are wanting to be. There is no place to bow hunt close to this spot due to it being cut-over timber. This is just a good sign of what's to come for rifle season!

Typical Monday

Well, today has turned into a typical Monday. All work and no play! I did manage to check my trail camera this morning but I have not made time to post any of the pics. I am guessing to have to work late tonight so I will not be able to download them until later. Does not really matter as there are only does and racoons on them anyway.

I thought I would just add this one for a change of scenary....The time and date are wrong but, this pic was actually taken in January 2008. This is a small 8 point that I had passed up a couple of times. I hope to see him this year with more mass than what he had here. The doe behind is actually on a scrape that I am assuming he is headed for. I have a stand 125 yards across a lake from where this camera is. This deer stayed around this camera to feed and behind on old barn on the property. Anyway, hope to have some more pics to post later but this weekend did not fair for any good hunting.

No bucks so far......

Seems as if the bucks are staying out of sight and farther back in the woods. My camera had about 20 pics of does feeding but mainly after dark. I hope that I will be able to find an adequate tree to climb in the morning to hunt a spot that seems to be promising. I have done some scouting in the area and have utilized areial photo's from www.gis.ms.gov to find draws and where hardwood and pine plantations meet. The weather should be cool enough to make the deer move and, if the projected feeding times are correct, the deer should be feeding by mid-morning.
Projected feeeding times:
2:10 a.m. 1 major
8:20 a.m. 2 majors
2:35 p.m. 1 major
8:45 p.m. 2 majors

Moon phase 1/4 Moon age 10.9

Slow week for hunting

This has actually turned out to be a slow week for hunting. Warm weather and rain has hampered my efforts to spend time in the woods. I did manage to find time to hunt for about an hour this afternoon in a spot I usually see alot of activity but, that was not the case today. I swicthed out my SD cards on the trail cam and did have several pics of some does feeding around my cabin. The pic above was captured on the 5th about 20 minutes before dark. There was actually another smaller doe running with this one. This also was a confirmation from my previous blog as too feeding times. I plan on hunting a new area in the morning and also moving my camera closer to my fields to prepare for youth hunt next weekend. I would like to see my daughter take her first deer this year!!

Day 1 of personal deer study

Yesterday afternoon was my first day to gather data from a personal "study" I am conducting on deer feeding patterns in relation to moon phases. I am gathering information based on moon age, moon phase, and projected deer feeding times. Deer feeding times also includes a 1-4 major that highlight the best feeding times. 1 being the lowest and 4 being the highest. I am using visual confirmation and a digital trail camera to gather results.

Day 1 11/5/2008
1/2 Moon Moon Age - 6.9
Location 34 degrees North/88 degrees West ( Marietta, MS )
Feeding times w/ majors:
5:20 a.m. 3 majors
11:35 a.m. 2 majors
5:45 p.m. 3 majors

I had a visual confirmation of '2' does feeding around 5:15 p.m. I will gather pics from the trail camera later in the week to confirm these and other feeding times and compare them to the projected feeding times.
